Diverticulitis continues to represent a source of substantial morbidity and mortality. Operative intervention for diverticulitis and its complications may be a source of considerable challenge. Recently, the percentage of cases performed by a laparoscopic approach for diverticulitis in colorectal training programs has exceeded 44% of all diverticular resections (JACS 203:322-327, 2006). The technical ‘tricks’ outlined in this article by a master abdominal surgeon need to be remembered and taught in order to facilitate patient outcomes.
