Ileostomy
Diversion of the fecal stream by the means of an ileostomy is a procedure frequently done in colorectal surgery. Proper creation of ileostomy is of paramount importance for the patient, whether it is performed for permanent or temporary use. Different techniques of ileostomy construction have been developed in response to the various clinical situations in which it is indicated, with either an open or a laparoscopic approach. It can be technically challenging but appropriate technique may minimize the risks of complications. Team management of the ileostomate in the perioperative period, including surgeon and specialized stoma care nurses, plays an important role as ileostomy rising is a physically and psychologically traumatic experience for most patients. When done as a temporary fecal diversion, ileostomy closure can be performed in different ways in terms of technique and timing, a matter of much debate.
